Adoption of Ecodesign implementation report

On 31 May 2018 the European Parliament has voted in favour of the Own-Initiate Report on the Ecodesign implementation presented by MEP Frederique Ries (ALDE, BE) (see the report here and the lists of amendments here and here). This text has been adopted with 561 votes in favour, 45 against and 17 abstentions. We will send you the final adopted text once it has become available.

As a reminder, this own-initiative report is not legally-binding, but it does indicate the political direction of the Parliament, and this report will likely be used in the upcoming revision of the Ecodesign Directive – to take place once the new Commission leadership is appointed after the 2019 elections.

The key points in the report are:

  • Shift from energy efficiency to resource efficiency in upcoming ecodesign measures, taking into account:
    • Durability, upgradeability, recyclability and availability of spare parts;
  • Need to improve market surveillance at the national level, as well as increasing cooperation between market surveillance authorities;
  • Make the ecodesign procedure more agile:
    • As for some fast-evolving technologies once the ecodesign measures are adopted, they may be outdated due to technological advances;
    • Avoid delays with the consultation forum meetings.
